We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining
Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3, 2025. The workshop
is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna Doctoral
School of Philosophy (VDP).
Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy:
philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for their
explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected according to
explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics, explanatory relations
direct our accounts of concepts and ontological priority; in philosophy
more broadly, we offer and compare explanations for facets of reality in
order to resolve conceptual problems.
